St Mary’s C of E Primary School - The Arc
On this tight site the adjacent mature plane tree dictated the layout for this new multi-purpose space. Other drivers for the design included accessibility and orientation.
The aim was to design an ecological building which could be used as a teaching aid, increasing the awareness of both pupils and adults to the possibilities of sustainable design. A number of environmental technologies have been incorporated, including a sedum roof.
Innovative construction techniques have been exploited to reduce the building’s CO2 emissions and embodied energy (super-insulated breathable walls, a timber floating floor system as well as internal and external finishes from sustainable sources).
Photovoltaic roof panels have been installed for on-site micro generation mostly funded by the Scottish Power Green Energy Trust and the government’s Major Demonstration Project.
