Woodford County High School - Sports Hall
The design for a new four-bay Sports Hall and changing facilities required a sensitive approach to ensure that the building would reflect a modern idiom whilst accommodating its present day functions, and at the same time relate to the adjacent historic Grade II listed buildings which house the main body of the school.
To this end, the scale has been visually minimised through the design of a simple, yet strikingly expressive curved roof, which reduces the visual impact and engenders a degree of energy/movement associated with sports activities. The rendered walls and punched windows below reflect the character of the existing buildings. The design has been developed in close co-operation with Sport England and the project is supported by a grant from Big Lottery Fund.
In addition to the Sports Hall itself, there are staff facilities, aerobics and dance spaces and a viewing gallery.
Sustainable and ecological building materials, passive ventilation and solar panels, have been incorporated throughout.
