This supported living scheme in High Wycombe includes the sensitive redevelopment of a Listed Victorian pub with new-build accommodation alongside it, designed to reflect the pub’s character in a contemporary way.

The development provides 14 supported living flats and communal facilities around a secure courtyard with 24-hour staffing for residents with mental health problems.

Keith Everitt, (Then Practice Partner for the project), said: “The local authority planners were not keen on this site being redeveloped because of the Listed pub. However, we were able to show that we could incorporate the pub into the scheme and provide a sympathetic new building. The scheme was granted planning permission within eight weeks.”

This was a challenging site with a steep fall across it and was wedged in between the railway line and a car park.

Keith Everitt added: “Our solution was to provide two storeys of accommodation at the front entrance to the development with three storeys to the rear. We achieved almost 100% site coverage with amenity space provided by an upper floor terrace – which overlooks a small park - linking the redeveloped pub to the new building.”
