Highdown Court
This former school site in Worthing has been developed to provide a 2, 3 & 4-storey Extra Care scheme containing a selection of 1 & 2 bedroom independent living flats, together with communal facilities.
Bringing a strong sense of colour and style to the street scene, the development acknowledges its heightened corner position with a four-storey, white-rendered rotunda, which is bordered with elegant, glazed balconies. Throughout the scheme, the large windows make the most of natural daylight, whilst balconies are both practical and decorative.
Multi-coloured weatherboarding clads the third floor and very pale buff brick defines the ground floor; together these reduce the perception of the overall height. Scale is further minimised by the means of rendered elements, which cantilever away from the main building; and the building steps down in height, and back in depth, giving the impression of a series of buildings.
Car parking is situated to the rear of the building, which allows distinct, bright building to sit uncluttered - albeit for the landscaped communal gardens that frame and soften the streetscape.
