Hall Grange
Hall Grange has been a care home since 1923. Prior to that the building was home to Rev William Wilks, a most distinguished Secretary to the Royal Horticultural Society and famous for propagating the Shirley Poppy. The gardens have rare plant species, including the poppy, a bog garden and acid grasslands that are of European significance.
With just 37 residents in buildings that had aged and increasingly higher repair bills, it was time to consider redevelopment. However, the original buildings were locally listed and the gardens ecologically highly sensitive and of great horticultural interest.
We drew up a plan for a phased development of the site that respected the ecology of the gardens and retained all TPO trees, including a magnificent Grade A oak tree that now forms the centerpiece to a new garden for the care home. We were able to draw upon the mature landscape to make way for the redevelopment and create beautiful, calm and tranquil gardens.
We successfully argued for the demolition of the locally listed building and achieved a vibrant new 86-bed care home (45 care places and 41 dementia places) - much to the delight of MHA Care Group.
