Ilford Hill

We were given the task to refurbish the Almshouses and Chaplain’s House of The Abbess Adelicia Charity Chapel.  The buildings are distinguished examples of Arts and Crafts Movement architecture and design, linked to a central medieval chapel, creating a secluded courtyard off the busy Ilford Hill.

The work consisted of the internal remodelling and structural works to form 7 flats, while restoring the many inherited features including the original joinery, doors, windows, ironmongery, parquet flooring, staircases and chimneypieces, and installing subtle contemporary services.  Continuous collaboration took place with the Conservation Officer to restore the brick and lime render façades and external features. The original Yorkstone paving was re-laid to achieve flush entrance thresholds.

The much deserved works to these buildings which were on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk Register, provide necessary residential accommodation whilst maintaining their rich history of over 850 years in the centre of Ilford.

St Francis

When we became involved in this project, the St Francis of Assisi Church was in desperate need of a new Hall to replace the derelict building occupying the rear of the site.

The design of the Hall is essentially that of a modern meeting and function facility.  It comprises a main central space, which can be sub-divided using folding acoustic partitions, along with individual meeting rooms, and catering facilities.  The Hall benefits from a thorough acoustic design to minimise disruption to the surrounding residential area during functions.

The south-facing flats provide a mixture of 1 & 2 bedroom accommodation in a 3-storey block, and have been designed with minimally-styled glazed balconies in order to maximise natural daylight and the views across the adjacent playing fields.

Both buildings are contemporary in style: the Hall reflects the Church’s aspirations for the future, through the use of modern building techniques and materials.  Coloured render and terracotta cladding, along with brickwork, sympathetically blend with the materials of the existing Church to provide a warm welcoming building.  The flats are treated in a similar manner, but are more restrained with a pavilion type character, appropriate to their sports ground location.

Mayville Junior School Site

Mayville Junior School Site for Christian Action Housing Association provides a mixture of 3 bedroom houses and 5 x 1 & 2-bedroom flats. The development is situated on the former car park of the adjacent Mayville Junior School and reinstates the existing building line at the southern end of Southbury Road.

The buildings front onto Southbury Road and are articulated by the use of projecting bays with feature stonework to the houses, and a projecting staircase to the flats, which incorporates metal framing with glazed and timber infill panelling.

The houses within the development incorporate a solar panel water heating system for the provision of hot water within the dwellings and to augment the requirement of the central heating system.
