St John’s C of E Primary School

This extension comprising 6 classrooms, 4 group rooms, storage areas/rooms and associated circulation areas and facilities, was originally designed by Michael Foster, a retired Partner of TFP.  The Partnership then won the commission to prepare working drawings for the selected main contractor under a D&B contract. It was the first school construction project in Essex to be managed entirely by the school itself.

Essex County Council recognised that St John’s C of E School, being one of the most over-subscribed schools in the county needed additional school places.  The proposed extension would support the plans to increase the school’s capacity from 350 to 450 pupils.

The design of the extension is of a character that is in keeping with the adjacent school buildings and also of a scale appropriate and considerate to its surroundings. The topography of the site has been used in the design and the materials tie in with the existing school character.  The extension has no visual impact on the Locally Listed parts of the original school or the Grade II Listed St John the Baptist Church.

The building was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Gloucester in July 2012

TFP won a limited competition for the design of an extension to the existing 1930s main school building for Felsted Preparatory School.

The scheme was built in two phases. Phase 1 consisted of four new classrooms, a new entrance and reception, a new staircase giving access right up the building and various ancillary spaces.

Phase 2, which completes the building, consists of a further classroom, a staff room and new CDT facility on the ground floor and an art room with gallery on the 1st and 2nd floors.

Exposed services at ceiling level in the CDT areas have been co-ordinated to act as a teaching tool, while natural plywood ceiling panels and exposed steelwork have been highlighted in the art room.

The Tooley & Foster Partnership won in a limited competition, this flagship project for a new Voluntary Aided Primary School for the Progressive Jewish Community in the London Borough of Redbridge.  In addition to the DfES and LEA requirements, the brief called for flexibility of use by the local community.

The site for Clore Tikva was a vacated allotment surrounded mainly by residential buildings.  The new complex comprises a Nursery and double-entry Reception, Infants and Junior Schools.

A number of environmental and energy saving devices have been incorporated, including a passive ventilation system, low energy light fittings, solar panels, rainwater recycling system and use of recycled materials in the landscaped and external play areas.
