Wembley Arena 02

TFP were appointed to carry out parts of the major refurbishment of Wembley Arena.  Wembley is a Grade II listed building so we needed to reflect the look and feel of a 1930s' building without creating a pastiche and whilst also utilising the newest materials and lighting techniques available at the time.

Part of our brief was to redesign the two main concourses which incorporate the catering kiosks, merchandising points and public toilets.

The catering kiosks and merchandising points needed to be large and built from robust materials able to withstand constant ‘customer traffic’. The main material used was a through body porcelain tile which is incredibly hard wearing whilst also being attractive. Each tile was large to complement the spaces around them. We also formed rough finished timber doorways into each kiosk which were then painted to match those of the original poured concrete building, giving the impression that they had always been there.

Each kiosk was also designed with an extended canopy which contains downlighting and perimeter lighting to clearly identify their location within the concourses, and the arena entrances contain colour change lighting to facilitate wayfinding.

We were also asked to design bespoke toilets as the space available to accommodate the amount of toilets needed was very small in comparison to new builds. We managed this with clever space planning and bespoke large open wash hand basins with sensor flow taps and lower sections for children. To reflect the original building these are made from poured concrete columns and sheets of Corian.

Wembley Arena 01

TFP were appointed to carry out parts of the major refurbishment of Wembley Arena.

The fundamental design change was handing the stage and main entrance to opposite ends of the building, with a new service yard at the rear and a new entrance at the front, now leading off Olympic Way.  In addition, the Grade II Listed building has been fully refurbished internally and externally to reflect the original 1930s architecture.

We were specifically responsible for the refurbishment of all the external fabric, including new roof coverings, new plant, new doors and windows, and redecoration. Internally we designed the two main concourses and the public toilets with robust finishes to accommodate the large numbers of people who will use them.  New catering kiosks and merchandising points have also been designed down the length of each concourse.

This significant refurbishment has totally transformed the venue, and successfully restored this great architectural piece to its former glory, whilst creating a spectacular 21st century icon.
