Community Arts Centre

Brentwood Community Arts Centre is located between existing buildings fronting Shenfield Road. The single performance space accommodates 200 people in a variety of different seating configurations.

The double-height space has a technical gallery on two sides.  The sound insulating building envelope has enabled the facility to operate within very close proximity to existing residential properties, with 35db sound attenuation.  In addition also includes an long, narrow single-storey extension includes a licensed bar and toilet facilities.

The form of the building is intentionally simple with a barrel vaulted profiled metal roof, which gives a good acoustic environment, a sprung timber floor, and blockwork walls fairfaced internally and rendered externally.

The building has proved to be a very popular local venue

Hutton is an redevelopment of a brownfield site with disused and unattractive fire service buildings to provide a new 77-bed care home and an adjacent development of 55 independent living apartments for Hallmark Care Homes.

We have designed a scheme that respects the scale and character of the surrounding properties and enhances the streetscape.

The site layout was led by arboriculture considerations for existing trees and how new trees could be integrated into the development. The two new buildings form a tranquil courtyard - with a central pond and new tree planting – which is approached through a Wisteria arch.

Both buildings draw on the traditional principles of symmetry and proportion reflected in the Georgian style of architecture which is prominent in the local building typologies. They benefit from entrance ways with classical features, including double columns.

The choice of materials - buff brick, off-white render, black roof tiles and reconstituted stone - suits the prominent location and relates to neighbouring buildings.

The scheme provides a variety of accommodation types and forms of tenure, addressing the local need for care for the elderly including dementia care.
