This extension comprising 6 classrooms, 4 group rooms, storage areas/rooms and associated circulation areas and facilities, was originally designed by Michael Foster, a retired Partner of TFP. The Partnership then won the commission to prepare working drawings for the selected main contractor under a D&B contract. It was the first school construction project in Essex to be managed entirely by the school itself.
Essex County Council recognised that St John’s C of E School, being one of the most over-subscribed schools in the county needed additional school places. The proposed extension would support the plans to increase the school’s capacity from 350 to 450 pupils.
The design of the extension is of a character that is in keeping with the adjacent school buildings and also of a scale appropriate and considerate to its surroundings. The topography of the site has been used in the design and the materials tie in with the existing school character. The extension has no visual impact on the Locally Listed parts of the original school or the Grade II Listed St John the Baptist Church.
The building was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Gloucester in July 2012
