The Tooley & Foster Partnership feel privileged to have been commissioned to create this £10 million state-of-the-art Auditorium.
Our challenge was to design a space that could function for this Academy School in accommodating assemblies, lectures, lessons and examinations and could then be easily transformed into a theatre or world class concert hall.
Robust materials were chosen throughout - solid timber for the flooring with contrasting timber wall panels in the main Hall - to create a warm and comforting space that is deliberately calm and unobtrusive. Matching timber acoustic screens close off double height windows and courtyard glazing to help create the perfect acoustics for the 730-seat auditorium when the concealed retractable seating is in place.
The calmness of the Hall contrasts with the other public spaces; it was considered appropriate that these should be more ‘theatrical’. This has been achieved by the extensive use of colour change LED lighting and imaginative fittings.
The reception area has been designed to allow the Hall to function independently from the School; this is achieved by a folding retractable partition which can be opened and concealed when the space is needed to act as the Auditorium foyer
