With the increase in demand for boarding accommodation for girls at Felsted School, The Tooley & Foster Partnership were commissioned to carry out a feasibility study which led to the design and construction of new accommodation within the grounds of a listed house and conservation area.
The new building is located next to existing boarding facilities and includes individual study bedrooms together with a common room, kitchenette and changing facilities. In addition it provides independently accessible residential accommodation for the Assistant House Mistress.
The materials used reflect the setting of the building, creating a welcoming and reassuring environment for the school residents.
In order to reduce the consumption of electricity, the top floor corridors have, in addition to the traditional electrically operated light fittings, use of ‘sunpipes’ to bring natural light into the centre of the corridors.
