Bentley Grange sits on a steeply sloping site with long distance views to Herstmonceux Castle, Saxon Weald are providing 18 x 1 bedroom and 27 x 2 bedroom Extra Care flats for elderly people. Of these, 10 are shared equity and the remainder are for affordable rent.
The scheme also includes a small day centre, which has been integrated into the communal areas allowing all the spaces to be opened up to create a large communal space for shared events.
At the centre of the site, between the entrances to both buildings, a landscaped court provides wheelchair accessible access to both, and the majority of the flats have balconies to take advantage of the scenic views.
A dramatic double-height space welcomes residents to the Extra Care building, with views through the lounges to landscaped gardens at the rear and a south-west facing terrace at the front, onto which opens the café and dining room. The smaller building provides an additional 10 self-contained flats as Supported Housing.
The angled plan of both buildings provides enclosure to the entrance court and gives interest to the buildings as visitors approach.
Saxon Weald Chief Executive
“Bentley Grange is our 10th extra care scheme and we’ve used our experience to great effect, creating an attractive and welcoming scheme.
“The facilities and the thoughtful design of the apartments mean that some people find that their care needs actually decrease after they move in, while for many the biggest bonus is the sense of belonging to a community, which tackles the very serious problem of social isolation and loneliness.”
