The Beacon Youth Centre as existing was an unattractive single storey concrete block building, purpose built in the late 1960s. An extension to and refurbishment of the building was commissioned to bring the Youth Centre into the 21st century.
The extension creates a new entrance to the building and houses a new performance/dance studio and office accommodation. It is linked to the existing building by a new internal courtyard and the existing hall. A large rooflight was inserted in the hall, creating an atrium space which contains a servery and exhibition area, and serves as the hub to the Centre.
The refurbishment of the existing building involved a reconfiguration of the existing spaces to provide training, multi-media, music technology and youth facilities rooms.
